    L’articolo riporta e analizza i risultati del censimento dell’offerta formativa nel settore della Geomatica promosso nel 2011 dall’AUTeC. I dati vengono confrontati con quelli relativi al censimento del 2009; il confronto conferma la tendenza alla riduzione dell’offerta, in relazione soprattutto all’applicazione del nuovo ordinamento didattico e alla contrazione del numero dei docenti negli ultimi anni. Vengono presentate in conclusione alcune proposte per trovare spazi adeguati alla attività formativa del nostro settore

    Comparison between topographic and photogrammetric techniques for deformation monitoring of the dome of the Massimo Theatre in Palermo

    This paper shows the first results of a study aimed at monitoring the deformations of the dome of the Massimo Theatre in Palermo caused by thermal dilatations, with the use of topographic and photogrammetric integrated techniques. Particularly, two robotic total stations and high precision digital photogrammetric systems were employed. In order to correlate the displacements of the rollers on which the steel structure of the dome rest with the thermal gradients, different thermal images were acquired by a thermal imaging camera. The main goal of the work was to compare the two techniques with reference to very small (submillimeter) deformation measurements. The obtained results show that the rollers are still working correctly. In fact, for a thermal gradient of 6 °C both topographic and photogrammetric techniques determined displacements in the order of 0.8 mm, according with the expected deformations of the theoretical model

    Monitoraggio topografico e fotogrammetrico della cupola del teatro Massimo

    L’articolo riporta i primi risultati di uno studio finalizzato al monitoraggio delle deformazioni della cupola del Teatro Massimo di Palermo provocate dalle dilatazioni termiche, con l’impiego di tecniche topografiche e fotogrammetriche integrate. In particolare, sono state utilizzate due stazioni totali robotizzate e sistemi di fotogrammetria digitale di elevata precisione. Per correlare gli spostamenti dei carrelli sui quali poggia la struttura in acciaio della cupola con i gradienti termici, sono state acquisite immagini termiche diversificate. L’obiettivo principale del lavoro consisteva nel confronto delle due tecniche di rilievo in relazione a misure di deformazione di entità molto ridotta (sub-millimetrica). I risultati ottenuti dimostrano che i carrelli funzionano ancora correttamente. Infatti, per un gradiente termico di 6°C misurato dalla termo camera, entrambe le tecniche topografiche e fotogrammetriche hanno evidenziato spostamenti dell’ordine di 0.8 mm, in accordo con le previsioni del modello deformativo teorico

    GPS-GIS integrated system for electromagnetic pollution

    In these last years employment and spreading of GPS real-time kinematic techniques is greatly improved. Its application field is extended from traditional topographic surveys to environmental applications. In this work a monitoring project of electromagnetic pollution is shown; this project has been carried out in order to realize an infrastructure of measurement, transmissions, elaboration and management of surveyed data. In particular, the results of a research about the realization of a first prototype of advanced system based on the integration of GPS receivers and other sensors are shown. The research has been carried out in collaboration with “Dipartimento di Ricerche Energetiche ed Ambientali” of University of Palermo and with the “Laboratorio di Fisica ARPA Regione Sicilia”. The experimentation has been carried out using a car equipped with roof rack where both an antenna and electromagnetic sensor were installed. The GPS survey was carried out by a integrated palmtop-GPS, linked with an analyser of electromagnetic spectrum, in broadband or not. Well than, a GIS has been created in order to show some thematic maps which represent the distribution of electromagnetic pollution and accuracy positioning

    Hyperspectral techniques and GIS for archaeological investigation

    Aerial photos, both in colour and in black and white, have always been very important tools in archaeological surveys. Sensors, called hyperspectral, were available on the market for some years: they are able to expand the research beyond the visible area of the electromagnetic spectrum as far as the thermal infrared too. The use of these sensors, at first restricted to the applications in the traditional fields of Remote Sensing (such as, for instance, Botany, Agronomy, Geology, Hydrology), was spreading, in recent years, to some sectors, such as archaeological surveys, which were unexplored before. The presence of structures and hollows in the top subsurface is likely to cause variations in humidity in the surface. These variations affect both vegetation, and some physical features of the ground such as thermal conductivity and capacity. Especially in the first hours of day, you can notice thermal anomalies due to different evaporation. The exam of these anomalies, carried out by the use of techniques of digital processing of images in the spectrum bands particularly sensitive to the abovementioned indicators, enables the photointerpreter to determine possible signs of underground structures of archaeological interest. The application of the remote sensing in archaeology allows to acquire, with rapidity, a lot of information connected to the territory; that's the reason why, together with the development of sensors, came out the necessity to take advantage from the potentialities offered by the GIS to manage, process and file the spatial dates acquired with the remote sensing techniques. In this work, in fact, the results produced with the image processing technique were implemented in a GIS and were overlaid on the historical and contemporary maps and on the DEM in order to produce, for each study area, a Prediction map of archaeological finds

    Surveying, modeling and communication techniques for the documentation of medieval wooden painted ceilings in the Mediterranean area

    Wooden painted ceilings of the Mediterranean area in the middle age have their origin in the islamic culture and were then spread in the countries under the dominion of the Arabs; some of the surviving ceilings are now located in Sicily and Spain. In the historic centre of Palermo two well preserved medieval ceilings are still surviving; the first, built in the XII century, is located in the Palatine chapel; the second one, built in the XIV century covers the “Sala Magna” in the Steri of Palermo. The research, focused on the ceiling in the Steri, deals with the definition of a process for the integration of surveying techniques (photogrammetry, laser scanning), modelling processes and communication technologies for the documentation of such artefacts. The documentation of painted ceilings requires the strict integration of photographic and 3D metric data; the existing documentation is usually made of documents (drawings, photographs) that keep geometric and metric data separated from the photographic documentation of the paintings. The first stage in this work is therefore addressed to produce a digital document that combines metric and photographic data in a 3D textured model; in the second stage a vocal guide interacting with the 3D model has been developed; such guide, thought as a support to people visiting the Steri, uses a database with historic contents and symbolic interpretation of the painted scenes to answer specific questions and “take” the visitor close to the related paintings

    Digital orthophotos at a scale of 1:5000 from high resolution satellite images

    This paper describes the first results of a study, carried out within the national research program “Cofin2001”, on the potential use of high resolution satellite images for making digital orthophotos at a scale of 1:5000 and 1:10,000. Particularly, images from IKONOS II and QuickBird of four different types of areas were employed: the first area is the city of Palermo, a greatly urbanized area; the second area is the extra-urban territory near the town of Contessa Entellina in south-western Sicily; the third area is the famous tourist resort of Scopello, in the western Sicily; the last area is the Caselle Airport, a flat zone near Torino. The first three images were orthorectified by using Rational Functions Model (RFM), varying the number of the GCP and using a DEM with 10 m gridcell; the last image was orthorectified by using the Toutin model and a DEM with 40 m grid-cell

    Microenvironment inflammatory infiltrate drives growth speed and outcome of hepatocellular carcinoma: a prospective clinical study

    In HCC, tumor microenvironment, heavily influenced by the underlying chronic liver disease, etiology and stage of the tissue damage, affects tumor progression and determines the high heterogeneity of the tumor. Aim of this study was to identify the circulating and tissue components of the microenvironment immune-mediated response affecting the aggressiveness and the ensuing clinical outcome. We analyzed the baseline paired HCC and the surrounding tissue biopsies from a prospective cohort of 132 patients at the first diagnosis of HCC for immunolocalization of PD-1/PD-L1, FoxP3, E-cadherin, CLEC2 and for a panel of 82 microRNA associated with regulation of angiogenesis, cell proliferation, cell signaling, immune control and autophagy. Original microarray data were also explored. Serum samples were analyzed for a panel of 19 cytokines. Data were associated with biochemical data, histopathology and survival. Patients with a more aggressive disease and shorter survival, who we named fast-growing accordingly to the tumor doubling time, at presentation had significantly higher AFP levels, TGF-β1 and Cyphra 21-1 levels. Transcriptomic analysis evidenced a significant downregulation of CLEC2 and upregulation of several metalloproteinases. A marked local upregulation of both PD-1 and PD-L1, a concomitant FoxP3-positive lymphocytic infiltrate, a loss of E-cadherin, gain of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) phenotype and extreme poor differentiation at histology were also present. Upregulated microRNA in fast-growing HCCs are associated with TGF-β signaling, angiogenesis and inflammation. Our data show that fast HCCs are characterized not only by redundant neo-angiogenesis but also by unique features of distinctively immunosuppressed microenvironment, prominent EMT, and clear-cut activation of TGFβ1 signaling in a general background of long-standing and permanent inflammatory state
